I truly enjoyed reading Painting 3. I could visualize myself stepping into that painting and experiencing the images that the character felt and saw. This story by Kathleen Shields is full of creative imagination through a painting. It creates imagery with words so that the reader can visualize the images within the painting. By blending the creative imagination, text, and the images within the painting, the acts of kindness were amplified.

After Kathleen Shields’ Paintings 1 and 2, metaphorical renditions of God creating the universe (Gerald creating The Painting), and His son, Jesus (Benjamin) teaching mankind about the love of His father, to the point he was willing too die for them, Shields’ third book, The Painting 3, introduces the Holy Spirit (Neveah-heaven spelled backwards) is sent to help mankind love one another, withstand trials, and do good deeds. Like God,, Gerald, or Geody, as mankind in his Painting calls him, is not a part of the Painting. He has his son, Benjamin, born into the Painting as part of mankind to to teach about his father and the Painting he created for them. Benjamin teaches them to believe in his father and to love one another. He teaches his disciples under a special tree and then gives his life for them to believe. In The Painting 3, Shields completes the Trinity by having Benjamin’s daughter, Neveah fly into the Painting much like a dove would, invisibly inspiring those in need of love, help and comfort to find it. She also helps by desiring those facing trials, tribulations, anger and division to resolves their differences. To do that, her father’s sacred tree had to be destroyed; however, at the end, when the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for the first time, enter into the Painting together, they see that the destroyed tree has lived on: the dead wood has inspired craftsmen to carve souvenirs from the broken limbs, and sprigs of new life sprout from the base of the old tree, prophesying the the cycle of life, love and faith in The Painting would endure.
